It’s Friday, so it’s time to link up with the lovely Jocelyn from The Reading Residence and decide on my Word of the Week #WotW.
This week my word is;
Baby started swimming last week as a Konfidence Swimologist. I knew it wouldn’t be an easy journey for her, as she is scared of having a bath. This means that from the age of about 2 months, she has showered with me holding her (no, not easy!). Last week was her first ever swimming lesson and she was petrified. She screamed at the top of her lungs for most of the 30 minute lesson. Even afterwards, when she fell asleep, her breathing was erratic for over an hour. Poor little thing.
So this week, we headed to our lesson with some trepidation. While we were waiting for our session, I sat on the side of the pool, as Baby clung onto me, burying her head into my shoulder. Then the crying began. I tried to distract her by talking about the other children, who were swimming. Gradually, she stopped crying and I was able to keep gently putting water on her, but she still wouldn’t let me go. Every time I moved my legs she would cry again, scared we were going in.
Then, it was time for our class and we popped into the water. She screamed, but gradually the crying didn’t seem as strong and she allowed herself to be distracted. She watched the other children, she chewed her flashing duck. Eventually she allowed me to hold her so she was facing out, without crying. I was, and still am, amazed. She joined in with the class, just doing easier versions of the exercises. She had a cup of water tipped over her head. She smiled! She started to make a little splash, when we were holding on to the side. She started to act like herself. A couple of times I did something that the rest of the class were doing, to push her a little and a couple of seconds of crying would ensue, but she stopped just as quickly as she had started. I felt like I had my little girl back.
The instructor and a few of the other parents commented on what a transformation she had undergone. I am so proud of my little girl, for trusting me when she is so scared and so proud of her for trying. She was very brave and I hope that she continues to gain confidence. I can’t wait to see her enjoying swimming, just like I did as a child.
