What to Look for in your Child’s First Bed
The time to move on to a real bed can come all too quickly in a child’s life. Suddenly your baby boy or girl looks gargantuan in their cot; just when you got them to sleep on their own! A child’s bed certainly has its own benefits, however, not the least of which is being easily accessible. There is no lifting them in (hard on your back!) or dangerous climbs in and out.
Here are a few great tips on what to look for when shopping for your first toddler or kids’ bed.
Examine your Options
When buying a bed for your big boy or girl you have two options. You can go for an actual toddler bed, which usually fits a cot-size mattress or purchase a single mattress and frame. Each has their own pros and cons.
Toddler Bed Pros:
- Toddler beds can be more inviting. They are available in a range of different shapes and sizes, from cars to sleighs and princess castles.
- They beds are often lower and easier to climb into.
- Toddler beds come equipped with necessary safety features such as safety rails.
Toddler Bed Cons:
- Although some are made out of more durable materials, those made of plastic may not hold up for very long.
- Due to their size, children often grow out of toddler beds rather quickly. They are shorter and narrower than standard size beds. They also have a weight limit. This means you may soon find yourself in a new search for a child bed- kids really do grow like weeds!
Single Bed Pros:
- Single beds simply last longer due to their size. A child can sleep in a single bed almost indefinitely; well into their teenage years. If you’ve got the space you can even go for a double bed.
- Single beds can be jazzed up with a colourful head board and/or fun frame. There are also fun bedding sets to keep in mind.
- As a bigger option than a toddler bed, single beds can hold you too. This can come in handy for reading bedtime stories, cuddles after a bad dream or just cosying up before the lights go off.
Single Bed Cons:
- Single beds can cost a bit extra as you’ll need to buy a mattress as well. If your little one is not quite toilet trained you’ll want to add a rubber sheet.
- You may need to add safety rails to a standard bed to prevent falls.
- Single beds may be too high for your child to climb onto on their own.
What to Look For
No matter your choice, look for a child’s bed with smooth, rounded edges and finishes. The bed should have (or be able to be equipped with) safety rails or a way to keep your child safely in the bed.
You’ll want to prioritise sturdiness, good construction and durability. Use these tips to buy the perfect bed for your growing little prince or princess! The right bed can really make the transition go more smoothly, and may even result in more sleep for you.
