The Beginning of the End – Pre School

Last Wednesday Baby started pre school and I have no idea how we are at this stage already.  She turned two at the end of March and there were a few reasons why we decided that she should start at this age.  Primarily, she loves to interact with other children and although she sees her little friends most weeks, pre school would give her even more opportunity to interact with children.  I also need more child-free time to work, to reduce the number of evenings I have to work until 1am.

As we have no family close by, it is always Mr Hubby or I that are with Baby, so it was always going to be a bit of a shock for all of us to be apart.

Pre School

A quick selfie before heading in for her first morning.

Deciding that it was time for her to be looked after, even for a second, by someone else was really difficult.  I have felt that as her mum, if I physically can look after her, then I should.  Not sure why, mother’s guilt maybe?  Anyway, it has become apparent that she will thrive in an environment with other children and I need to cut the apron strings a little and trust that she will be o.k with someone other than her daddy or myself.

She is normally quite confident in new situations, but having never even been left with family before, I didn’t know how it would go.  It was quite difficult to hug her and say I would be back later and it felt very odd to walk out of the hall without her, but I did it (I resisted the temptation to run back in and take her home!).  I was fully expecting a call after an hour, to say she was upset or that she was tired.  No call came and three hours later I arrived to collect her.  She spotted me as I peered through the window and gave me a huge smile, shouting ‘mama’ to the lady she was with.  Once I was in the hall, she ran over and gave me the biggest hug.  It was just so lovely.

She had obviously got on really well with the staff, chatting away and then saying ‘bye bye see you soon’ to them all.  They all remarked on how well she had done.  At the beginning she had gone to the window a few times saying ‘mama’.  At one point she was taken away from the main group, given a little snack and some one to one time, but there were no tears, no tantrums and at the end she was dancing around with a little friend.

So proud of my baby girl.

Here is a very short video I made of her first day.
