A couple of weeks ago was a momentous day in Baby’s little life; it was her first sports day. For weeks, at pre school, they have been practicing. She has become obsessed with racing and she even crouches down to get the best possible start. She has started doing her stretches, which is the cutest sight to behold and we have practiced our version of the egg and spoon race, with a bat and ball; I think our version is much harder!
Anyway the day arrived and she was really looking forward to it. We had to drop the kids off at the usual time and they had a practice, then all the parents (and apparently half of the County) arrived back at 11am for the big event.
On arriving back at the village hall, the little garden was packed and it seemed as if most others had brought half of their families with them. As the garden filled up, the children filed out to sit on benches. I was desperate to see her, yet unsure as to whether I wanted her to see me. I only usually appear at the end of the day, when she runs into my arms. So I hid a little trying not to catch her eye and put her off. The bank of audience must have been a little bit scary for all the children.
Then the races started and her group was one of the last to go (being the youngest). Her teacher helped her, holding her hand and completing the obstacle course with her, but as she neared the end of the race she crumbled and was asking for me. I fought through the crowds and gave her a big hug. I was allowed to stay on that side of the bunting with her to give her hugs and give her the confidence to go with ‘Miss Lesley’, her favourite teacher, to do the races; allowing me to get a few quick snaps.
I am so proud of my little girl, she is only just over two and for a child of that age it must be quite intimidating to have so many strangers watching you; but with Mummy’s support she was able to join in and have some fun too between races.
After her races she was so tired, that we skipped the teddy bears picnic, but not before popping in to collect her bag. Where did my little baby go?!
