Getting away from it all and spending quality time with your kids is what life is all about. Unfortunately, family holidays can also be very expensive. But if you do your research and plan well in advance then you can easily find the kind of holidays you are looking for. Just follow these easy steps…
- Decide on your budget
We all want the perfect family holiday, but, be realistic: you don’t want to be paying for your holiday for the rest of the year. Deciding on a maximum figure first will help you to avoid costs spiralling out of control. Once you know what you are able to spend, your research will be a whole lot easier.
- Be flexible about where and when
It’s a good idea to sit down as a family and decide what you want out of a holiday; somewhere to relax by the pool, for example, or an activity-based break such as skiing, diving or trekking. Once decided, do be open to destinations that you might not have thought of; often the lesser known holiday destinations can be cheaper and quieter. The same goes for the time of year; although you may need to work around school holidays, there are certainly times of the year when cheap holidays are much easier to find, including mid-week or late in the day flights. The more flexible you can be, the easier it will be to find the best deals.
- Shop around
An obvious point, but don’t just opt for the first holiday you come across on the internet. These days’ cheaper holidays can be found on a range of websites, so check reputable travel companies, holiday price comparison sites and late deal websites.
- Do it yourself
Although an all-inclusive package deal might seem like the easiest option, there are great savings to be had if you book the individual elements of your holiday – flights, travel and accommodation – separately. Remember that on some sites, flight prices appear without baggage charges, booking fees and taxes that will be added afterwards, so be sure to check the final total before booking.
- Check your insurance
It is always advisable to take out holiday insurance, including medical cover, but before you pay for a hefty package, do double-check that you’re not already covered through another means, for example through your bank account. Many accounts offer travel insurance as part of the benefits. If not, then holiday price comparison sites are a good way to compare deals.
- Ask around
The internet is full of people giving their opinions on places and accommodation, so when it comes to booking your family holiday make sure you read plenty of real life testimonies. Nothing beats a recommendation from a trusted source such as friend or colleague too, so ask around before finally making your choice.
Once booked, all you have to do is pack and make sure all travel documents (including those crucial passports) are together in one place. Then simply relax and enjoy your precious family break.
