I have always loved photography and over the last few years, since starting my blog, I have really tried to up my game and raised the standard of my pictures. My Instagram following is growing rapidly and I am now being approached by brands on the basis of my photography.
I think a great photo has a lot to do with having a good eye. Knowing what you want to capture and being able to put yourself in the best position to make the shot more dramatic or powerful in some way.
However, I couldn’t produce good images without my kit and am often asked what camera I use or how I edit my pictures, so I thought I would share all my gear here today.
This camera is a reasonably cheap DSLR and cost me around £450 with the basic lens kit (18-55mm). Although the prices have dropped now and you can now snap one up for £318.
I got this lens as part of the package when I bought the camera and I use it every day. It is a great all rounder.
I love this lens! I don’t use it as often as I should, as it isn’t a zoom lens, so you have to zoom with your feet. I think this is suited to shots around the house/garden or in the park, but not really when you are going to have to change from close up to shooting things further in the distance. It is a wide open lens that lets lots of light in and it is great for helping you to create a blurry background in your shots.
I got this to help with shooting in situations like the zoo, or anywhere that I need more zoom capacity. Reasonably priced too at under £90.
This is the tripod for my DSLR. Very useful to have; I inherited mine from Mr Hubby.
I practically live in a cave, so need lights for any indoor photography and also for vlogging. At under £70 for two large soft box lights (each with two independent lights inside), I think it is great value. They kick out so much light.
I record all of my vlogs and family videos on my iPhone. Although I take most of my picture with my Canon, I do take some on my iPhone.
This is a recent purchase for me, after a recommendation from my good friend Hannah. It is a great tripod which make shooting craft/cooking videos really easy and it’s super cheap too.
For less than £10 this will really help the sound quality of your videos/vlogs.

I pay around £8.50 each month for access to Lightroom. My photos have improved no end since I started using Lightroom and my custom filters.

Great tips Aby, I use a Nikon camera and lenses but I guess they are all similar really it just depends on which one you go for. I have resisted lights so far for making videos and I am hoping now it is getting lighter I won’t need them but it might be something I will need to invest in in the future. x

This is fantastic, I don’t use my 50mm enough but find my 17-55 still gives nice depth of field I have so many lenses on my wishlist. Your photography is inspiring huni xxxx
I love how generous you are with all your tips, I don’t think I would have got my blog from a piece of paper if it wasn’t for your fab info! I sold my Nikon pre baby so do yearn to get back into photography! You make me feel like kids and pictures can mix!I am guiltily going to go look for the tripod/selfie stick! Also I have been using pic monkey and have been wondering at an upgrade so may go get my little self over to lightroom. The older my son gets the more my eye bags need a filter!Thanks J x
I am absolutely clueless, but when I have more time I’d love to really get into photography as a hobby and to support my blog. It’s great to have some pointers for the right equipment when the time comes! X
