I’ve written over 4k blog posts, so you could say I have experience in this area! I share these tips with my community and clients and now it’s your turn.

How to write an awesome blog post

1. Write an attention grabbing blog post title

The most important part of writing an awesome blog post is your title. If you get this wrong then it doesn’t really matter how on point your content is as no-one will click into your posts anyway. You need to grab people’s attention with the title and create intrigue so they will want to click and read.

However, bear in mind that for SEO purposes the title needs to be clear and a correct representation of the content, rather than a click bait or way too abstract title. Remember clear over clever.

Here are the important factors to consider when you’re writing your headline.

  • Make it interesting but honest
  • Make it short and sweet – Shorter titles tend to get more click throughs.
  • Use an odd number – Psychologically people are drawn to odd numbers, with them getting more clicks than even numbers. So ‘5 ways to bake a potato’ would get more clicks than ‘my favourite ways to bake a potato’.

2. Longer isn’t always better…..

EVERYONE has an opinion on how long the ideal blog post is. There’s no magic number. A blog post should be however long it has to be to deliver the information in the best way. Sometimes if you’re sharing a quick tip or a recipe for example a post around 400 to 500 words might be the most appropriate.  Other times you want to go into a little more depth and teach your readers something then you might be in the thousands of words territory.

*Think scan-ability and break up your content

*Use headlines and sub-headings

*Keep your paragraphs short

*Use lists and bold important key terms

*Use bold and formatting

3. Choose your awesome images

*A picture can draw readers in  – we process images 60k times faster than words.

*You need pictures for social media shares

Where do you get those images?

1) You can take them yourself

2) Get some stock photos

4. Craft a good call to action at the end of your post

All content you put out there should have a point and as such should have a call to action – whether that it to visit another site or simply to respond to you.

Some other examples of CTA are;

*Encourage them to comment and interact with you by asking a question.

*Invite them to connect further via social media

*Make a recommendation  – Check out a cheat sheet or post

*Invite them to join your list – Often the best thing you can do at the end of your blog posts is to invite readers to join your list. Once you have them on your email list, you can invite them to come back and read other posts, comment on them, join you on your favourite social media platforms and of course make offers to your readers. Getting them on your list should always be your first priority, so use that call to action often.

5. O.k. you’ve create this amazing post but what can you do right now to encourage social sharing of your blog posts.

*Start with quality content

*Make it pretty

*Make it easy to share

*Ask for the social media share

6. Engage your readers and encourage interaction

Blog comments plus with a little social media interaction and there’s no reason you can’t turn this into a fully engaged conversation that will help you grow a loyal base of fans that know, like, and trust you and is also comfortable spending money with you or your sponsors. For that to happen you need an engaged audience.

We do it by asking them questions, by asking them for feedback and by encouraging them to share their options – right from our blog posts.

Now, the next step is crucial. As soon as you see that first comment or two pop up, reply to them and keep the conversation going. This will do two things for you. Not only will you have a great conversation with the reader that commented (and a chance to form a deeper relationship), seeing you reply also shows other readers that you care and really want to hear from them. And that’s what’s going to encourage more and more of your loyal readers to comment. The same goes for social media engagement too.

  1. Compelling titles and introductions make your readers want to read your post right away. Recent studies show that while 80% of people will read headline copy, only 20% will read the rest. This is the hidden importance of great titles, and why getting them right is so vital to a successful blog.
