Most parents will be asked for a pet at one time or another. Most will be wary of agreeing, as let’s be honest it is us that do most of the pet maintenance involved! However, a pet can be a great addition to the family as it doesn’t just bring fun and love it also teaches responsibility, can improve self-esteem, and other skills.
Depending on the age of your child, the pet you choose needs to fit in with your family life. Time for playing, exercising, cleaning out their living space, costs and veterinary needs should all factor in to the decision.

Fish
The easiest pet is one that needs little maintenance. An aquarium with a few goldfish can look really pretty. They need a decent tank, and a filter to keep the water clean, plus you can make it as appealing as you wish. Regular water changes are important to keep the tank fresh and clean. The fish will only need feeding a small amount every day, which little children can help with. Of course make sure hands are washed afterwards.
Reptiles
If you think a more hands on approach is for you, a reptile can be a great choice. They can be costly to start off with as they can need a lot of equipment to maintain the right environment. However once set up they are relatively easy to keep. They are great pet for older children with pet fur allergies too.
A Crested or Leopard Gecko is a great pet for an older child as they need little maintenance, but if they are handled every day they thrive and can be an entertaining companion. Bear in mind that reptiles aren’t advised for under 5’s, due to the risk of salmonella. Encourage good hand washing skills to avoid contamination.
Cats and Dogs
A cat or dog is of course a popular choice. Children respond well to a four legged friend, and they often grow up together forming a strong bond.
Dogs especially can be an active member of the family, and go along on holidays and days trips forming many happy memories. As they grow up children can become more involved in walking, feeding and grooming which has been found to help with social skills and learning to be responsible.
Cats are generally more independent, however they can still be a great pet for children as they need feeding, grooming and playing with. Cats can be a devoted friend and a part of the family for many years.
If you buy a cat or dog, bear in mind that training can be a lengthy process. Toilet training and behaviour issues can be frustrating and take time. As with all animals, young children must be supervised at all times.
Consider all of the relevant factors before taking on an animal, and your child is sure to have years of fun with his new friend, whether scaly or furry!
