The kids are all settled back into school and we are all looking forward to Christmas. For the kids of GCSE age, they have to get through the hurdle of mock exams, before they can celebrate.
It can be hard to help children stay calm and relaxed about exams. While we all want our kids to be successful, we need to balance the amount of pressure and ensure above all else that they remain happy and confident in their work.
However, we can’t get away from the fact that exam results matter and can have a significant impact on our children’s lives. So how do we help them achieve their full potential, while keeping them balanced and happy.
Create a quiet place for revision – a little space of their own in peace and quiet will help your child to focus and will also create a division from their day to day lives and their revision/work life.
Encourage breaks – Make sure they take regular breaks to get up, stretch their legs and clear their head.
Be their constant support – Support and talk to them about how they are doing; make sure it’s always supporting, not pressurising.
Hire a private tutor – Hiring a private tutor, such as Fleet Tutors, for some additional one on one tuition can really make all the difference in their confidence, as well as their knowledge.
Use past exam papers – Some degree of exam fear is fear of the unknown, so use old exam papers to practice with and so your kids learn they type of questions asked and the format of the exam.
Help them plan – Help them to go through their exam timetable and prioritise which subjects to concentrate on first.
Provide good nutrition and keep hydrated – It’s so important to encourage your kids to stay hydrated and help them by providing them with healthy snacks and meals.
Sleep- Make sure they are not work late into the night. Encourage them to sleep well to ensure they are firing on all cylinders.
Methods – Help them to figure out how they learn best, are the auditory, visual or more practically focused. The help them to find revision methods to fit in with the way they learn best.
