Helping your baby sleep better

How to become a mum when you are single

Perhaps it’s because they haven’t yet found the right partner or rather, because they sense their biological clock ticking and their chances of becoming pregnant gradually diminishing. Whatever the reason, more and more single women are making the decision to fulfil their dream of having a baby anyway.

These days (especially in the UK where legislation is very progressive regarding this matter), there exist many different methods and technologies designed to help single women become pregnant. Discover more about the options available below.

Finding a sperm donor

If you are a single woman, as you don’t have a partner, you obviously need to source semen from elsewhere in order to become pregnant. Sperm banks, fertility clinics, choosing someone you know as your donor or finding the right one on the internet: there are many options available to help you find a sperm donor today.

When you’ve found the method that best corresponds to your requirements (whether you feel more reassured by the privacy and the safety of sperm banks or prefer the idea of selecting and getting to know your donor via a website), the next step is to find someone who matches your criteria. You will often be presented with many choices, including ethnicity, eye and hair colour, education or even hobbies. Take your time to make the best decision!

Of course, when opting for a known donor, for instance, an acquaintance or someone you’ve met through a dedicated website, it’s important to ensure that he has undergone all of the mandatory medical screening tests before taking things any further.

What fertility treatments are available to single women?

Once you’ve chosen the donor, you’ll next have to consider which method to use in order to help you become pregnant. In the UK, fertility treatments such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilisation are available to single women.

Some will prefer to remain in the comfort of their own home and perform the insemination themselves. This can be done easily by purchasing an at-home insemination kit that contains everything needed to perform the insemination. However, it’s always recommended to seek advice from a medical professional first, to avoid putting you or your baby at risk.

Another solution is to undergo an artificial insemination which will be performed by a doctor in a fertility clinic. This is generally considered to be the safest choice.

Unfortunately, sometimes, insemination just does not work, even after several attempts. If this is your case or you find yourself experiencing fertility issues, you might consider turning to in vitro fertilisation (IVF) instead. This technique involves fertilising an egg (donated or not) using donated sperm in a lab, before transferring the resulting embryo into the womb.

Co-parenting with your donor?

Some solo mums-to-be prefer their donor’s role to extend beyond simply providing semen. In such cases, the donor is also expected to be involved in the pregnancy process, as well as the upbringing of the child.

When you look for a sperm donor online, not only do have you the possibility of getting to know them better, you also have the choice of becoming co-parents and therefore sharing all responsibilities and rights towards the child. This means that, once the baby is born, you agree to raise you son or your daughter together, to share all the fees related to his or her welfare and education, as well as jointly making all of the decisions related to their upbringing (religion, choice of school, etc.).

Raising a child on your own can be more challenging than it is when in a relationship. The decision to do so is often misunderstood and even, sometimes, criticised. However, becoming a single mum is both possible and rewarding and more and more women in the UK are taking this route to motherhood. In doing so, they too can know the joy of having a baby.
