The perfect sweet treat

Which sweets evoke memories of your childhood? Do you remember taking your pocket-money-pennies to the local shop and waiting patiently to fill that paper bag? Impatiently queuing while staring at the jars behind the till. Which sweet treats got your vote? Maybe now, even as an adult, you simply cannot resist those particular sweets. Allowing yourself a little daydream about your childhood, as you sneak out of your kids view to eat one…or a few……. Maybe it was Refreshers that you couldn’t resist or Drumsticks that you couldn’t do without.

During recent years people have increasingly turned to ‘Retro’ in terms of influencing their decor, clothing, values and this has included a revival in the love of retro sweets. While they may not be available in all shops, you can always buy them online. Retro sweets make lovely, thoughtful gifts (for an adult with a sweet tooth) or for kids. You may choose to also include them in kid’s party bags.

Swizzels is one of the largest sweet producing companies in the UK. With the humble beginnings of a Hackney market stall in the 1920, the business has grown into one of the largest sweet producers and exporters in the UK. From Drumstick lollipops to Love Hearts, you’ll find it all encased in retro packaging in it’s Derbyshire factory home. The famous Love Hearts were introduced by the brand in 1954. They are an iconic sweet if ever there was one. Called upon for kids parties and quirky weddings alike, they offer a sweet retro twist that can’t be matched.

In 2014, new messages were added as part of a competition to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Love Hearts. These include, ‘Take a selfie’, ‘Skype me’, Tweet me’, ‘’Totes hilar’ and ‘Yolo’. So they are totally up-to-date! Maybe there’s someone in your life that would love a retro sweet hamper? Did you know they can even be personalised? Jars, bags, or hampers, the choice is yours. Whatever you decide they are sure to make an unusual (but yummy!) gift.

Ava has just celebrated her 5 birthday and we threw her a party. It was her first one in France and so she was keen to invite all her little school friends. Unlike previous years we couldn’t really add any decorative elements and the venue provided a very basic cake (unlike the Princess Poppy head I created for her last year!). I was disappointed, as I love to create a party venue which reflects everything she loves.

Had we still been in England she would have been all over a Princess and Unicorn party, they are her favourite things. I know very stereotypical! My girl lovely pink and that’s that!

Creating awesome party bags

I think I might be the mum who goes a little overboard with party bags. I love the thought of celebrating those who have come to celebrate with my daughter. So, I want them to have a bag packed full of treats. Something to play with, something to create and obviously the sweet treats. Personalised Love Hearts Birthday Party Sweets would be perfect to add into party bags.

Decorations

For Ava’s first birthday we threw an Alice in Wonderland themed party (more for me than her!). I made all the decorations myself, from tissue paper fluffy ceiling balls to playing card bunting. I went over the top…. There are so many Princess themed decorations in the shops I wouldn’t have to resort to making them myself.

Pass the parcel

A kid’s party isn’t complete without the games and one of Ava’s favourites is Pass the Parcel. Adding Swizzels sweets personalised love heart sweets in between the layers means all the little ones get a treat during the game.

Bake the cake

As long as I have enough time, I love creating an epic cake. The finish might not be pro, but I might up for it in enthusiasm. Previous birthdays have seen me create stacked top hats (from Alice in Wonderland), Postman Pat’s van and Princess Poppy’s head. This year I bought the cakes that we had at home, but there was a request for a Pink Princess cake….

Cake

From Wedding favours to party bags there are so many ways you can sweeten your life! Another way is to win the amazing prize I have to offer courtesy of Swizzels.

  1. I wish I had a little girl. I love these sweet treats and the cake looks scrumptious. I would love to have a birthday party with all the pinkish candy colors and of course the candy and cake too. I want to reach through the picture and steal several pieces of candy.

  2. Not saying this because of the competition but actually is Love Hearts, I have packs upon packs of them in my handbag so if I’m feeling sluggish I have a couple that give me an instant sugar boost

  3. im such a sweetie monster 🙂 I love Parma Violets, Haribos, Love hearts, Drumstick lollies, I think my favourite though is refresher bars
