5 Things; I Want to do Before I am 40

Welcome back to ‘5 Things’, this week I thought I would share;

5 Things

Thinking of myself as almost 40 years old is such a strange experience.  I have no issues with getting older, or with telling people my age, I am 38 in May (by the way).  Yet I still think of myself as in my mid twenties, maybe knocking on the door of my thirties.  In just over two years I will hit the big 4 0 and so I thought it would be fun to share 5 things that I would love to do before I am 40.

5 things

  • Go to New York.  I haven’t travelled as much as I would like and I would so love to visit New York, which always seems so vibrant and fast-moving.  It is definitely top of my dream travel destination list, blame too much Sex and the City!
  • Take Baby to Southern Ireland.  We went touring round Southern Ireland on our honeymoon and fell in love with Dingle and Cork.  It would be amazing to take Baby and to experience these places again as a family.
  • Be confident enough to do a ‘How To Look Good Naked’ style picture.  Firstly, I feel I must point out I don’t want to hang this picture on the wall.  I haven’t got exhibitionist tendencies either.  All my life I have felt, or been, overweight and as a consequence have lacked confidence in myself and in my body.  Agreeing to a Gok Wan style, tasteful naked shoot, would mean that I had reached a point where I was happy in my own skin.
  • Afternoon Tea at the Savoy.  If I was in my happy place, then tea and cake would definitely be there with me.  To be fair I would probably be as happy sampling wonderful cakes in a cool independent cake shop, but the Savoy gives the occasion more prestige.  Obviously I would need a new (stretchy!) dress to wear.
  • Swim with Dolphins.  I didn’t want to write this, as it sounds so cliché.  However, the more I think about it, the more I am utterly convinced at what a tremendous experience it would be and for that reason it made my list.

So that’s my ‘before 40’ bucket list.  What would you like to experience before your next milestone birthday?  Do you fancy swimming with Dolphins?

I would love it if you could spare the time to vote for me in the BIB awards (‘Family’ probably fits my blog best)

  1. I have just realised I am 37 this year and like you think like I’m still. In my twenties, I feel no different. New York is the only thing I have in my mind to do before I’m 40 too. I have to go there! I can help you out with the Gok wan experience btw, it’s what I do for a living. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I have always wanted to swim with dolphins – I absolutely adore them. It’s funny because New York has never been a pull to me. I love America but have never felt the need to visit NY – maybe it’s cause I’m from London and it’s just feels like london on a bigger scale or maybe it’s because I know is need a shed ton of money to be there and shop! Same reason I’m not fussed about Vegas hehe! I do love afternoon tea too – I’d love to have it at Betty’s in Yorkshire. We did find it when we were on holiday there but the queue was too long! #sundaystars

  3. All of these are fab ideas! I want to go to New York too. Although I am never sure I would ever be body confident enough to do a naked shoot it is a lovely idea.

  4. What a great list, my Mum in Law wants to have afternoon tea at The Savoy too, maybe I will go with her whenever she goes??
Hope you get to do the things on your list, and we readers would love to hear about them.

  5. What a great list, I am thinking along the same lines as I am turning 30 in November and I am trying to think about what I would like to do for my birthday and what I would like to day before it, though I think it will have to be a modest list as I don’t have much time left! All of a sudden I feel like I have gone from 21 to 29!!!

  6. Oh wow, these are all such great things to do and you have over 2 years to do them – achievable too! Love the naked photoshoot idea and your reasoning behind it x

  7. I’m 40 at the very end of 2016. I swam with dolphins last summer and it was amazing. New York would be fantastic too.

  8. Book it, do it all (if you can afford to)! Turning 40 feels like a long time ago to me but it was the point I realised none of these ‘milestone’ birthdays mean anything. You say you still feel like you’re in your mid-twenties, me too in a way. Good isn’t it! But actually birthdays are a good moment to look back and reflect on how far we’ve actually come. OK i might say I feel like I’m still in my twenties but what I mean is I don’t feel ‘middle aged’ whatever that is supposed to feel like. This despite the fact that since turning 40 I’ve “settled down” – ie. got married, got my first mortgage, and become a dad.
If i really think about what i was like in my twenties, basically a confused kidult who lived for the weekend and going clubbing, I can see how much happier I am. But getting older is a cause for celebration. We hopefully know ourselves and what we want much better, and we’ve hopefully reached some of the goals we dreamed about. Keep dreaming and stay true to who you are. 🙂

Would love too, but finances are our enemy at the moment. You never know though that the future holds, so fingers crossed 🙂 You are right hun, I am happier now that I ever have been, thanks for your lovely comment x

  9. I am 40 next June and should probably do a similar list. I had intended to go to New York as I would love to go, but we are now toying with the prospect of a blowout family holiday to Peru instead….well…who needs savings anyway?!

Ooh you should do huni, it was good fun. Thanks it would mean a lot for me to be comfortable with that! x

  10. Ooh, a great list – such a good idea to do this! Maybe you could plan to go to NY for your 40th birthday? That would be ace – and plenty of time to plan. If you do go you should totally do the ‘Sex and the City’ bus tour – if you are a fan of the show/movies. It’s fab – a great way of seeing the city, plus you get to see loads of the show locations. It was definitely a highlight when we went (yes the hubby willing came along too…)

I would love to do that. I think we need New York tourist board to ask us to review it, otherwise I worry our finances will hold us back.

  11. Ahh this is a great idea for a post! I might do something similar. I am 28 in June and it feels so odd to be nearly 30. Elsa’s daddy has family roots in Southern Ireland so I’d love to take her to Cork too. Good luck!

  13. Such a great list! Love the idea of a bucket list, such a fab way of making dreams a reality. I haven’t been to The Savoy (yet) but I can certainly recommend The Ritz. Also when you’re ready, I know just the woman to take your naked pics 🙂 xxx

  14. I share your Ireland wish as that too is where I spent my honeymoon! Would love to return with the children. It’s great to make lists like these, just do something very small each day towards making them happen x
