How to avoid moving day meltdown

Moving day – a day notorious for causing stress levels to rise for absolutely everyone involved, even if you’re only moving up the road. If you’re finding yourself face to face with an upcoming moving date and are not sure where to start, I’ve put together a list of tips that might just take the edge off your stress levels. Creating a smoother and more efficient moving day, meaning you can get started enjoying your new life in your new home.

Give the kids to someone else!

Trust me, if you can’t fit the moving process into the time that they will be at school, you’ll want to offload the kids to a friend or family member. This will make moving day, faster, more efficient and you won’t be looking around your ankles constantly in paranoia that you’re tripping over a small person.

Find a removal company

You’ve got better things to do than ring up every removal company under the sun and compare quotes. So consider using Shiply to gather quotes for you while you do something more fun or productive with your time! On Shiply you can ask to quote for whatever you need, be it a full, part or minimal service. Decide what’s best for you and your family and let the quotes start lighting up your inbox.

Declutter

Moving is a great opportunity to get rid of things you don’t need – not only will it mean you have to move fewer boxes to the new house. It’s also an opportunity to make some money by selling anything of value that you no longer want. Perhaps your home is full of toys from when your children were small, or you have a cupboard of baby clothes that could do with a new home. If you’ve got a while until your moving date, consider having a declutter and hopefully you’ll make some cash while you’re at it. If you’re not sure of an item’s value, take a look at the ‘completed listings’ of similar items on eBay and decide whether it’s worth selling. If not, consider donating to charity where possible or recycling responsibly.

Ask for help

Friend, family member, acquaintance, person on the street. If you’re owed any favours, use them now, because any sharing of heavy lifting could massively reduce the feeling of overwhelm. You can repay them with BBQ food or a takeaway after a hard day’s work. Just remember to be prepared to repay the favour when the time comes!

Reassure the kids

Some will be excited to move and some might be more anxious, particularly if it’s a big move. We always think about the stress that moving causes to us adults, but it’s important to remember the effect it could have on the little ones, too. You might like to take the kids for a day out in the new area to get them familiar with their new area. Show them the new home before moving in if you can. It might be comforting to them to let them decide how they’d like their new bedroom to be decorated, or where they’d like to position furniture in their room. If they are worried about losing touch with friends, try and set up a goodbye party where you can exchange numbers and arrange a date for their friends to visit the new place.

  1. Thank you for sharing these wonderful ideas. It is really stressful when you are moving house. Yeah, I think I should ask for help rather than keeping everything with me and pretend that I’m fine with all the workloads and stress around me.
