Baby has always been a wonderful mix of tomboy and princess. I’m sure it is a lot to do with how I dress her, I combine lots of pretty dresses or frilly skirts with Doc Martins or high top trainers; much better for running around in. She adores her cars and toolbox, as much as she loves her cuddly toys and dolls.
A while before her birthday she started to become more interested in really girly things, face painting, make-up (lip balm), princess shoes, the works! Don’t get me wrong she still loves her cars, but there was a definite shift.
For her birthday we bought her a dressing up rail packed with new fancy dresses and a dressing table with stool. I bought her some make-up brushes and bits and bobs to make her feel as if she has proper girly things like mummy.
She was so thrilled with her presents and now we have a full blown girly girl on our hands. She can’t go into her room without running to her stool and gazing into her mirror. If I try to hurry her, she will tell me that she is doing her make-up and she won’t be long!
She spend ages brushing her face with her makeup brushes, asking me what each brush is for as she goes through every brush in her little set. Then she moves onto putting on her lipstick (lip balm), choosing from her many varieties, before finally brushing her hair and popping on a flowery headband.
I sometimes worry that she is too young to be worrying about make up and how she looks; then I realise she is just copying me. She thinks, quite rightly, that she is pretty and swiping a make up brush across her face doesn’t change how she feels. If her daddy fixing something, she would want to copy him too; it’s just the way kids are.
When I was pregnant I could only see myself with a girl, although we were desperate for a child regardless of gender; it feels like fate that she is here with me.

This is lovely, when Matilda asks for ‘make-up’ I always say no you are beautiful as you are, but you have made me realise that actually its okay, she is only copying me and so long as its not bright proper make up its okay.
Loved reading this. My daughter I think will very much be a tomboy too just like my son is very sensitive. I absolutely love the mind of a child and I love that my children aren’t fussed about gender specific toys, I don’t think I ever was either. Like you I think it’s so cute to watch my girly girl play with dinosaurs and tools because a toy is a toy to them and I absolutely adore the girly side of her to see her dressed in gorgeous outfits and I can’t wait for her to copy all my make up brush swishes, they’re just adorable aren’t they!
I love the mix of tomboy and princess, anything that allows them to follow their own path and it looks like she has found that place for right now. So cute X
