Wednesday words #7

I am linking up again with Crazy With Twins Wednesday Words feature.  This feature give’s us license to find a quote, lyric, poem, whatever we fancy that we identify with or that helps to tell our story..

 comparison

Do you compare?  Do you look at other people and think they are doing better than you?  A better mum, a better wife?  I am grateful for my life, so very grateful for my husband and my beautiful baby, but I still can’t help comparing.  Maybe if I had been more focused on my career, rather than doing jobs that made me happy or gave me time to go and ride my horse.  Maybe then we would be more financially stable and be able to afford a beautiful house.  Maybe we could buy one, rather than rent.  We would have something to leave Baby.  I see glimpses of people’s lives and they seem more successful, better off, bigger houses, more grown up.

Other mums seem to glide around in a haze of perfection, put together, in control.  Dinner ready for hubby and a clean house.  I am lucky if I am not covered in baby food by the time Mr Hubby gets home.  I am grateful we have somewhere to live,  some people don’t.  I long for the house to reflect us and be somewhere that I feel comfortable asking people round to, but we haven’t and I don’t.  I feel embarrassed of our house,  it seems so unfinished, it’s not glossy.  Baby doesn’t have a playroom filled with beautiful toys.  She has a pile of toys in the living room.

I don’t compare and feel jealous.  I compare and feel as if I have failed.  If I had done more, been better, then maybe we would have the glossy house,  Mr Hubby may not have to do the housework when he gets in from work, we would act like proper grown ups, we would eat at the table, rather than on our knees.  I am a wife, a mum, a blogger, a business owner,  never getting anything achieved, as being a mum takes up nearly all of my reserves.  Then the lists grow longer and the stress increases.  Then the comparisons start all over again.  If others can do it why can’t I?

How do the others keep all the plates spinning?

  1. comparing is definitely something everyone does, but i think what you do with it is more important! i don’t get jealous either, but instead i try and find a positive spin, or find a way to integrate whatever it is into my own life, if it’s something thats suitable.

  2. I think everything is an illusion!! It’s impossible to keep everything at the ‘amazing’ level, some things have to fall and it’s all about priorities for you and your family. That said I’m also terrible about comparing myself!! But I do try and think about the bigger picture and realising that more often than not everything is not always as it seems with those around us!

  3. Oh I so relate to all of your words. ALL of Aaron’s toys are in the sitting room. I feel exactly the same. One day I hope to have that show-home. Apparently people do get depressed looking at other’s lives via Facebook. There was a whole session on it. I can’t remember if it was at Cybher or Brit Mums Live xx

  4. Oh my – I am very guilty of this, as hard as I try to think otherwise I do get frequent attacks of the green eyed monster. I don’t feel failure as much when it’s something I physically can’t do or have, but I have to admit to comparing aspects of my life to those of others and feeling sorry for myself. It is something I am actively working on though – so I guess that’s a good thing 🙂
Love this link up – may have to join you later 🙂

  5. I think it is human nature to feel like this. I am always comparing myself to others, especially now I blog. Everyone else always seems to be coping and doing a better job than me! I often have to have a little talk with myself to stop being so silly!

  6. Oh crumbs, comparing is the worst thing to do and also the most impossible thing not to do as a mother. If it makes you feel any better I feel like a failure too most of the time!! And I drop a lot of plates! Great post!

  7. Great quote. Comparison is definitely not a good thing. I tend not to do it. I’m in the same boat as you with regards to the renting a house and not being covered in food when Hubs gets home… but you know what? I’m happy. I don’t care what other mums do, as long as my family are happy. #WednesdayWords xx

You’re right, it’s just hard sometimes, I feel as if I am not good enough. Then someone gives you a bit of perspective xx
