Before Baby came into our lives, I worked in a vets practice and ended up rescuing two dogs, who were destined to be put down. The dogs went everywhere with me; to the horses, to work and if I am honest they were substitute babies.
So when the real baby came along, it was quite a difficult time for all of us. Previously, the dogs had been allowed pretty much free rein, spending every possible second curled up on our laps. I trust my dogs, but they are just animals and so I was very stressed when Baby came home. It took quite a while for things to settle into a new groove. The dogs no longer allowed on the furniture and then as soon a Baby was mobile, they were moved into the hall/kitchen during the day (they can see us).
As Baby is growing up, we are starting to give them ‘supervised’ time together and Baby loves it!
She still gets quite excited when the girls come in to visit her and our more timid dog can’t last that long before she needs to go for some quiet time in the peace of the hall.
That said, I am not sure who enjoys this time more, the girls love the fuss and Baby adores her furry friends.
They are the perfect size for her too!

Our old dog died when Tibbs was 9 months old. I miss him every day, but he was not a fan of small children and chose a very opportune time to cross the bridge. We now have a new Lab puppy and 23 month old. It is utterly bonkers but they love each other dearly and we love watching them grow up together. Hooray for kids and dogs, I say!

They are the perfect size for her aren’t they?! I’d love to get a dog, but I think I’d really better wait a bit longer, especially as my husband really isn’t keen 🙂

I have a dog (which now lives with my parents as our rental didn’t allow pets *sulk*) but my daughter loves him more than life itself! He was her perfect little companion and didn’t even mind no longer having free reign of the house.

Ah this is lovely Aby and I think it is so important for children to grow up with pets. I am desperate to get a dog, but I think we have our hands full enough as it is at the moment! One day though! x

Great post. Love the pics. Your dogs are so cute and your daughter even cuter. I grew up with pets and they saved my emotional life. I agree with Katie, animals can play a really important part in a child’s life.

Ah it is lovely to see Baby enjoying time with the dogs, we have a 4 year old JRT and it has been hard integrating them together, as soon as my daughter is mobile I am going to have to rethink my strategy as I don’t want to leave them alone, you have done it in a good way, it makes me sad when they get shipped off to dogs home because of new babies.

You sound like you’ve doe the right thing introducing them slowly. We’ve got a spaniel who has a lovely temperament but would never leave him alone with our baby. #magicmoments
