Our Potty Training Journey

Somehow last Monday lunch time we started potty training.  I needed to change Baby’s nappy and she was being silly running away from me.  So I asked if she wanted me to get the potty and she agreed.  Although we are Huggies Pull Ups ambassadors and have had the potty knocking around for a while now, something was preventing me getting on with it.  She was showing some signs that she may be ready, but I was worried that she wouldn’t be and that it would be a stressful situation for all of us!  Hence I avoided it.

Our Potty Training Journey

Anyway my hand had been a little forced and with the horrible weather soaking everything outside, I kept my fingers crossed that everything wouldn’t be soaked inside too!  Well, my little baby totally surprised me and I can’t believe how well she has done.  Within 10 minutes of the potty being out, two wees had been had in it.  She adored getting the stickers she received as a reward and loved putting them on her Princess reward chart.  Each time she runs to the potty and sits on it her little face lights up, she is so proud of herself, it literally beams from her face.  After a high 5, she selects her sticker and helps to place it on the chart; we make a huge fuss saying how we are going to show Daddy and how he won’t believe what she has done.

I hate toilet talk, but let’s just say that bar one occasion, when I took the potty away too early (totally my fault), there have been no accidents and all ‘business’ during the day ends up in the potty.  I am writing this on Thursday night and there are 40 ‘I used my potty’ stickers sparkling on her Princess reward chart.  I do not ask her if she needs to go, she simply tells me she needs to go and trots off to her potty.  If I am out of the room, she gets on with it and tells me what she has done when I return.  She even got down from the table during dinner to go for a wee and asked to come out of the bath, did a wee, then got back in!  I am so proud of her.

Update: On Friday we moved on to getting her familiar with pulling down her pants (as she was just been running round with a skirt on at home) and we ventured out with our Huggies Pull Ups and My Carry Potty both days of the weekend.  I am so amazed, no accidents, completely dry both days.  She simply said she needed to go and we grabbed to potty or stopped the car and that was that, wees in potty and off we went again.  We are not focusing on night-time, I really want to get the day time nailed before we complicate things, there is plenty of time for that yet.  So far, I am so proud and a little bit amazed at our beautiful daughters progress.

Potty training

I am no expert, but I thought I would share some things that have worked for us during our first week.

Potty Training Tips
    • Have two potties in the room.  This saves accidents when you remove one to empty!
    • If you remove one potty, highlight the whereabouts of the other to the child.
    • Use a reward chart of some sort.  Stickers are often loved by kids, so it’s great to use them.
    • Make a big deal out of the successes.
    • Talk about potty training a lot and remind them of their achievements.
    • Use Pull Ups when you go out and over night initially.
  • When we go out, we actually put the Huggies Pull Ups over her pants, so she still feels like a bit girl (as Katie from Mummy Daddy Me did for Mads).

I am linking up with the following fabulous bloggers and their lovely linkys.

  1. A big big well done to Baby – what quick success!! We’ve started too but we’ve had some accidents – although we’re using the toilet as she preferred to use the potty as a HAT! x
