Oatly (Oat-based milk alternative) Review

Swedish brand Oatly have recently relaunched their milk alternative, a dairy free oat-based drink.  Oatly is currently Sweden’s number one milk substitute.  The range is made up of five products, original (ambient and fresh), chocolate, cream substitute, creamy oat and is priced between 79p and £1.64 per carton.

Oatly state that you can use the drink wherever you would use milk, drinking or in recipes.  There are three key ingredients, oats, water and a pinch of salt, making them vegan friendly too.

Oatly

My verdict

I tried the chocolate drink first.  I LOVE milkshakes, although my flavour of choice would be strawberry.  I found that the chocolate drink tasted a little creamier than milk.  While it wasn’t the best milk drink I have ever had, I did finish the whole glass.  If I had a dairy intolerance then I would definitely buy this again.  I think it would be a good alternative.

The Original was less pleasant to me.  Again it seemed creamier than milk, but I didn’t like the taste.  I though I would try it in a cup of tea to get the full experience.  I like my tea milky (light beige!) and to get it anywhere near the right colour I had to add A LOT of Oatly (much more than the amount of milk I would have to add).  Due to the amount of Oatly that I had to put in, for me it made the tea taste unpleasant.  It also left an after taste.

So for me I probably wouldn’t purchase Oatly again, but if I needed to avoid dairy, then I would buy the chocolate one.
