After years of not going away, this year we have definitely changed that and have been away on lots of breaks. Often just for the weekend, but I do love a weekend break. There are so many reasons why they get a big thumbs up from me; not using hubby’s precious holiday allowance, far easier to get a dog sitter than for a whole week, less time away from blogging (so less to catch up on!), to name a few. There are many wonderful places to spend a lovely family weekend; here are some ideas in case you fancy taking the family away soon.
London
We haven’t yet experienced a weekend in London as a family, but I would love to. I haven’t done the tourist thing and think that would be such fun to see London through Baby’s eyes too. 17 Things to Do in London with Kids shares so many wonderful things to do, if you do manage to book a weekend there. I think Baby would adore the London Eye and she always enjoys a trip to London Zoo.
Festivals
We were lucky enough to be Camp Bestival Bloggers this year and so last July we experienced our first family festival, which was amazing fun. There are so many activities for children and it truly is family friendly. I would definitely advise taking an off roading buggy, even for slightly older toddlers, as there is so much walking.
Bristol
Bristol is so vibrant and quirky, with lots of great places to visit with children, many of them free. The city also has its fair share of green spaces, making it perfect for children. Visiting the balloon fiesta that takes place each August is on my wish list.
Liverpool
I used to live in Cheshire and Liverpool was a regular night out venue for us. I hadn’t been back for years, until a couple of years ago, and so much has changed. Liverpool One is amazing for shopping and has a really continental feel. Baby loved exploring the Albert Dock and spotting all the wonderful statues that are dotted around the city. Whether it is shopping or sightseeing Liverpool really does have it all.
Isle Of Wight
The Isle of Wight is so accessible that it is possible to enjoy a weekend stay there. We went back in the summer and the ferry crossing was only around an hour. Once over there you can enjoy so much of the island, as it is only 23 miles across. Being very family focused there is always something that the family would love to do and it is well worth the trip.

We are also big fans of regular weekends away. It breaks up gaps between longer holidays and it is always exciting exploring new places. We are heading to London for the weekend soon to meet Santa in his grotto in Harrods and return to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park:) We are all very excited! Fab ideas – I’ve only just stopped working weekends and have already embraced a few weekend breaks – a long weekend in the country or a city break would definitely get the thumbs up from me x
We used to live in Bristol so I can heartily recommend it as a fab place to visit. There are several child-friendly museums such as At-Bristol (a science museum) and the water fountains outside this place are amazing on a hot day – one big wet play area for small children (I don’t think the designers had this in mind when creating the space, but it really is magical to see so many children having so much fun in such a beautiful space!) The street art is stunning, and i can highly recommend the falafel king on the water front for the best falafels ever!
Oh I agree it is easier to get a dog sitter for a weekend. A weekend away is so refreshing, we usually head to the beach, not just in the warm weather though. We love the beach in Winter when it is deserted and we go to cafes and warm up with hot drinks and yummy cakes. Just spending time with games on the floor with the kids with no house cleaning to worry about. It is bliss.
