Baby adores animals and can’t go outside without pointing out all the cats, dogs and birds she comes across. As the weather has turned a little chilly of late, we decided to make the wild birds a treat; which would hopefully fill their bellies during the cold weather. Baby was so excited about making the birds some treats and couldn’t wait to get stuck in.
What you will need
2 cups of birdseed
1/4 cup of flour
1 sheet of gelatin
1.5 tbsp golden syrup
1/4 cup water
Just pop everything in the bowl, soaking the sheet of gelatine in some cold water first to dissolve it, before mixing it in with the rest of the ingredients. Baby loved this bit, as mixing is a favourite pastime of hers at the moment.
When everything is thoroughly mixed together, pop some cookie cutters on a lined baking sheet. Parchment or foil is fine (I just wiped the foil with a little oil to make sure nothing stuck. Then fill up the shapes with the mix; pressing down with your hands to really pack it all in.
When you have filled them all, take a skewer or a chopstick and make a hole, which you will then thread with string.
Carefully lift the cookie cutters off.
Leaving you with perfect shapes!
Leave the birdseed shapes on the tray for about six hours until they are dry, before threading them with string.
We decided the go to our local county walk and deliver the treats to the birds.
We spent some time trying to find the perfect tree to hang them up in and of course Baby had to test out the tree herself.
Baby thought she had spotted the perfect tree in the distance, so off we set.
Finally, we found the perfect tree and got to work adorning it with our treats. They looked lovely on the branches and it was lovely to create something which we knew would help the birds when food is otherwise sparse.
Baby selected the right branch for each treat shape, sometimes she needed a little help from mummy to get high enough.
She was so proud of what she was created.
After the last couple where hung up, it was time to head for home and hot chocolate to warm ourselves up, safe in the knowledge that we had done a little to help our local wildlife.
We had such a fab time; it was so much fun ( and super easy too!) to make the treats and it was lovely to combine it with a trip to distribute them (once dry!).

This is such a great idea especially taking them to the woods. I am going to make these with my eldest as I love this idea and he will love making them.
What a fab activity to do with a toddler and they look really impressive too. Bet the birds couldn’t believe their luck. I’d love to try this with Jasmine.
