Preserving Special Family Holiday Memories

Holidays are very special to families.  It is time to be together, away from the distraction of work and everyday life and spend quality time with each other.  Children can gain an understanding of other cultures and everyone is free to relax and have fun in a way that is not often achieved at home.

Mr Hubby and I hadn’t been on holiday for about five years until this year when, thanks to this blog, we have been blessed and have gone away quite often.  Baby has had her first family holiday, her first holiday abroad and flown in aeroplane for the first time.  All fabulous memories that we want to preserve.  We want to remember her face as she rode on a suitcase for the first time through the airport, to never forget how happy she was to pony ride in France and to cherish the sight of her ‘teaching’ Mr Hubby to throw sand in the sea.

Photographs

Photographs are probably the widest used method of keeping these special memories alive.  I have been known to take over 1500 pictures over a single weekend.  These can be uploaded and shared on your social media feeds as they happen or printed off once you return.  If you are sharing on the move there are lots of great apps that will help you to create truly memorable images.  I love the idea of creating a photobook for each holiday.  I wish I had done this with our pictures, although there is still time.  Then, with minimum effort all the pictures are in one place and you can even add text comments to the pages.

Shoot a holiday video

For me video can be more effective than photographs in capturing special events and it is lovely to have a video of a holiday which condenses all your magical moments into a short film, just like our Cornish Adventure.

Create a travel scrapbook

All kids love sticking things together, so why not create a scrapbook with all your bits and pieces from your holiday.  You can add written information and the kids can help you decorate the pages.  Sticking in photos, tickets or anything else you like that will help you to remember your holiday.

Start a collection

Your collection could be of anything.  We collect keyrings for Baby from all our days out and holidays.  I then tie a brown luggage tag onto each one and write on it where we were and the date.  Your collection could be postcards or you could collect stones from your travels and write on them the destination and year.

Keepsake box

Pick up a pretty box or even an old shoebox would work.  Decorate it if you want and pop in all your holiday treasures.

Map your holidays

If you have enough wall space, I love the idea of a world map that you can stick pins in with thread leading to special holiday photos stuck up around the edge.

Blog about it!

Even if you are not a blogger you can set up a free blog that you use to write about your holidays. Even if your holiday posts are the only ones, it is a wonderful way to preserve these memories and it makes it so easy to share your adventures with friends and family too!

  1. When we move home it is at the top of my to do list to buy a massive map and pin out where the boys have been and hang it in their room.

For the Toddler we have the “country towel” which is a massive white towel that I’ve sewn flags of the different countries he’s visited on. I plan to do the same for the baby too!

As they get older I love the idea of giving both of them a camera to take photos and have them make their own scrapbooks.

  2. I think I would only manage photography, video and a blogpost. I’m always so impressed with people who are good at doing more creative stuff with their photos, like scrapbooking or making a travel map.

  3. I love taking lots of photos and scrapbooking my holidays, but I hadn’t thought of taking a video before! Mainly because I don’t like the sound of my own voice – but it’s a great idea x

  4. I’d definitely like to get a huge map and start pinning it at some point, although that’s still on the To Do list. In the meantime I do take lots of photos as well, and have started to do my own videos this year too. Photobooks are great (although I’m a bit behind on those as well) and I’ve done some photo mugs recently which is such a lovely reminder every morning when I make coffee.

  5. I think having a map is a fantastic idea! I keep meaning to start one for my family & still haven’t. Of course keeping a record on the blog is a great way to preserve those memories too! x

  6. Its great that your blog has given you some wonderful opportunities to travel. I love the idea of collecting key rings and adding a tag. I am sure she will treasure them as she gets older. You take some wonderful photos as well x

  7. Something I encourage my children to do is to keep their own scrapbooks, where they stick in postcards and little mementoes from holidays and other day trips and then we write something about it. Usually them dictating to me but now my daughter is older, she is writing it herself. It’s lovely to see what is important to them. x

  8. I love the idea of a holiday keep sake box, i have never thought about doing anything like this at all. Once my son is another couple of years older I will encourage him to keep a scrap book with holidays pictures I always used to do this.

  9. For us, just photos and a few bits of videos at the moment, and then obviously the blog. N has got a map of the world, so when we eventually go abroad maybe we’ll sticker that.

I like the key ring idea with tags. I used to collect badges, postcards and rubbers from places we went as kids, my mum was a bookmark collector and my brother did keyrings. But in the end, what do you do with them? They get chucked because they’re clutter and noone else wants them which is a shame. Well, I used to use the postcards for competition entries when I got older!

  10. I’ve just bought a map that the girls can colour and add things to so they can see where we’ve been. I’m really conscious that now is the time to start collecting memories in a way that we can cherish in years to come. I also think the blog will be great to look back on. I have so many picture in folders on my computer but the blog tells the story behind the pictures x
