Have you noticed how many lip-smacking foods appear in films? It’s such a disappointment when you return to the real world, to realise that you can’t swim in a river of chocolate, or nosh on a moon waffle. There are absolutely oodles of creative ideas that have not been capitalised on—somebody get out there and make some money on these!
Enormous marshmallows
Do you remember the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man that stomps around Manhattan in the 80s classic, Ghostbusters? Sure you do! But it seems sweet and cake companies have completely overlooked this big fluffy idea. We are crying out for someone to make giant marshmallows. Or a cake. Anything, please, anyone?
Willy Wonka’s chocolate river
Another classic film with major snack potential is Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, rather unbelievably. There are loads of imaginary foods in the factory, like lickable wallpaper, everlasting gobstoppers, wax teacakes, and soda that makes you float. Okay, so that last one is a bit far-reaching, but somebody could surely recreate the chocolate river. You could float on that!
Chef’s chocolate salty balls
Chef from South Park is always good for an amusing bout of nostalgia, what with his outrageous double-entendre songs and all. But forget the innuendo, what we really is Chef’s chocolate salty balls – made with real Belgian chocolate truffle and covered in chocolate bits please… nom, nom, nom…

Pumpkin pasties
J.K. Rowling’s imagination took her further than magic potions and flying broomsticks – she even invented some taste-tempting foods. The lip-smacker that most grabs my attention is pumpkin pasties. Somebody at the Real Pasty Co. should be jumping all over that. But until they do, you could always try the Butterbeer from the Harry Potter Studio Tour.
Vegan ginger pie
If anybody has seen the 1971 classic, Harold and Maude, you may remember the scene where Maude invites her young lover round for Oatstraw tea and ginger pie. You can actually buy oatstraw tea (and it has excellent health benefits), but not ginger pie, which also has health benefits given that ginger is amongst the world’s healthiest foods.
Homer’s moon waffles
We couldn’t compile a fictional foodstuffs post without including one of Homer’s delicious concoctions from the hit TV show The Simpsons. But forget Duff beer, that does exist, yes we’ve tried that and, ughh it’s dreadful. Instead we want to see Homer’s moon waffles dripped in Nutella. Or just golden syrup will do.

So come on food manufacturers, it’s time to get out the creative hats, pots, pans, wooden spoons and whatever assortment of ingredients you need to deliver fictional foods to our taste buds. We are waiting. Still waiting.
If you could buy – or make – a fictional food, what would it be? Share your ideas with us!
