Challenge Yourself #4

Welcome to the fourth ‘Challenge Yourself’ link up.  You can read more about the reasons I started this link up and started setting myself monthly goals here.

This month I set myself the challenge of learning to edit a picture in photoshop.  When I set myself this challenge I did realise photoshop is not something you can learn in three weeks, but I just wanted to be able to do a few tricks to enhance my photo’s.  What I naively didn’t realise is, that I do not have the full or current version of photoshop on my computer.  Unfortunately I did not realise this until I had spent many torturous hours poring over tutorials and wondering why I hadn’t got the options I was meant to have….

So my challenge this month feels like a bit of a damp squib.  Although I have spent quite a few hours in photoshop, I have very little saved work.

Upon realising my software shortfall, I popped over to Mammasaurus’ blog as I know she is a bit of a whizz.  As I am always adding text to images, I would like different effects up my sleeve.  So I followed this simple, but excellent, tutorial and here is the result.

Baby Picnic

I know it is very simple, but I have never used photoshop before and I really like this effect.  I hope I can continue to learn the tricks that my mini photoshop offers and integrate them into my blog over the next few months.

Onwards and upwards, onto my May challenge.  As I have blogged about previously, I have a very small family and a lack of a sense of history.  With this in mind my next challenge will be to research my family tree and try to learn a little more about where I come from.

How did you get on with your personal challenges this month?  What will your next challenge be?

Through my previous challenges I have learned how to use my camera properly, learned how to knit and created Baby’s birthday cake

  1. My challenge? To be honest, I haven’t thought about it. However I am going to go away and think about a challenge for me, I seem to be too busy thinking about everyone else. Hey, that’s it, thats my challenge to think of myself a little bit more 🙂 xx

  2. A great start to learning a tricky but fantastic piece of software! My hubby is a graphic designer and Web designer so a whizz on Photoshop, but it baffles me! Good luck with your next challenge, I’ll hopefully be linking up this evening and setting my May challenge xxx

It is a lovely blog even if it is just for a visit, but great tutorials. Can’t wait to read about your challenge next month x

  4. Well done for learning something new 🙂 Photoshop baffles me and I’d love to know more about it, but I don’t think I have the to do it right now. I really like the idea of challenging myself and I have an idea of what I would like to achieve this month too.. I signed up for a FutureLearn OU course that I really like the sound of but have struggles to keep up with it so far.. this month I will challenge myself to catch up 🙂

  6. I’ve never really used photoshop as I don’t have it on the computer although I have used it at work a couple of times. It does seem quite complicated. I would recommend picmonkey which is a free online photo editing tool which is really simple (and I know that Mammasaursus uses this too!) You do have to pay a small sum (about 30 USD/ year) to use all the features but I reckon it’s worth it. I also sometimes use Pixlr, iPiccy and Photobucket (all free). You can add all sorts of things like text to photos, add frames and use different filters. Good luck with your next challenge with the family research – sounds like a biggie! My challenge is just to keep the house, kids, job and blog going – can’t cope with much more!

Oh I use PicMonkey, I just thought you could do more with photo shop, but I think a lot of it is over my head. Think I will be going back to PicMonkey x

  7. I’ve tried lots of different ones but find that the best application to use is the one I’m most comfortable with – mainly Pixlr & picmonkey – I’ve tried canvas too but then end up forgetting what is which 🙂
