The Bride’s Guide To A Winter Wedding – 6 Do’s & Don’ts

Once that engagement ring is on your finger, it’s time to set the date and when it comes to choosing the season, what could be a more romantic setting for your wedding than a blanket of snow? 

Although – unfortunately – we can’t guarantee a white wedding in England, it is one of the many reasons that winter weddings are becoming more popular. That and the cost, of course. Weddings are expensive, they can cost upwards on £20,000, but the day and season of your wedding will dramatically alter the price.

While most couples opt for summer weddings in the hope of having a warm, sunny, rain-free day it is as difficult to guarantee sun in summer as it is to guarantee snow in winter.

The best time to actually have one (price-wise) is a weekday during the winter – a wedding on a Tuesday in November could be up to 50% cheaper than a Saturday in June. This less popular time of year will also mean there is a relative lack of competition, therefore giving you a much better chance of negotiating with suppliers – slashing the price even further. 

So, if winter wedding bells with be ringing for you, there are a few dos and don’ts to ensure your winter wedding is as fabulous as that 77 Diamonds sparkler on your ring finger:

Do think carefully about timings

Remember it gets dark earlier in the winter, so this may affect the timings of the day. You don’t want to miss out on taking photos outside for the wedding album, because it is suddenly dark before you know it. 

Don’t forget insurance

Although you don’t want to think about anything going wrong on your wedding day there is, with everything, the possibility it could do. With the potential of snow and/or ice on the roads (as lovely as this weather will make the backdrop of your wedding) it could be a nightmare for you, your guests and the suppliers to get to it. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, with winter wedding insurance.

Do embrace the season

If you are going to have a winter wedding you want this to be reflected in the theme of your whole day. Think mistletoe to steal a sneaky kiss from your now husband, fairy lights and an autumnal colour scheme.

Don’t go over the top with your theme

While embracing the season can add a wintery romantic feel to your wedding, don’t go over the top with the Christmas theme. Mistletoe and fairy lights will add a nice touch to your day, a Christmas tree, tinsel and singing snowmen might start to make it slightly tacky.

Do choose seasonal flowers and food

Bear in mind that different food and flowers are in season during the winter. Seasonal will be much easier for the florist/chef to get their hands on and therefore not cost you the astronomical price out-of-season flowers and food will. Plus, they will add to the wintry feel of your wedding day – think winter roast veg on your dinner plate and pinecones, holly and evergreen in your bouquet.

Don’t get cold feet

It goes without saying that temperatures plummet in the winter and your wedding day is more than likely to be icy cold.

Bear this in mind when choosing both clothes and shoes for you and your bridesmaids. Perhaps a longer sleeve on the dresses, and fur coats or shawls, which will look elegant, as well as keeping shoulders warm. Plus, why not consider kitten heels which will avoid any slips on the ice that could occur with skyscraper heels. 

Plus, you need to think about how you will keep your guests warm on the day – blankets across seats and hot chocolate and mulled wine instead (or as well as) champagne, for instance.

So as the temperatures drop and the snow (hopefully) starts to fall – have a very merry wedding day!
